Domestic Violence

In May 2005 an Ecumenical Conference met at Ushaw College in Durham. This conference drew together those who had experience working in the field of domestic abuse and those who wished to gain a deeper understanding of the issue. There were representatives from many denominations across the North East and there was input from those whose experience was drawn from a wide variety of perspectives.

To read the report produced from this conference followed the link on this website. The report contains shocking stories and statistics about the existence of abuse in ALL our communities. It explodes the myth that domestic abuse doesn’t happen in our congregations. Domestic abuse is something we have no choice but to take seriously. People are suffering all around us. It is time we spoke out and made our churches a place of safety where such abuse is not tolerated. Wherever there is violence and abuse God’s image in us is being abused!

In the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle progress is being made through the Diocesan Task Group on Domestic Abuse. The Revd Sue attended this conference and is also a member of the Task Group.
